The SuperMicron Monitoring System was installed on a 1,350-metre section of steel penstocks for hydroelectric use in the Aosta Valley (Chavonne). The plant was built in 1922 and the state of corrosion of the penstocks was a cause for particular concern. The SuperMicron Sensor System was used to monitor the behaviour of the penstocks during draining and filling operations, as well as during normal operation. After six months, the operating company realised that, in order to be managed safely, the plant would require significant intervention. The decision was therefore taken to modernise the plant by replacing the penstocks and simultaneously increasing the plant’s flow capacity.
The SuperMicron Monitoring System enabled a detailed analysis of the pipes’ behaviour, an assessment of their condition, a calculation of their remaining service life, and a risk assessment.
