Italian deep tech for structural safety

InSensus Project srl designs and manufactures wireless, patented structural monitoring systems that are low cost and maintenance-free.

Founded in 2015, InSensus Project srl is an Italian deep tech company that develops wireless structural monitoring systems based on the proprietary Smart Skin Sensor technology: low cost, easy to install and manage, durable, maintenance-free, applicable to any substrate and at any point in a structure's life.

The company covers the whole value chain — research, development, design, manufacturing and commercialisation — with turnkey solutions from sensor to software for monitoring major infrastructure (bridges, tunnels, retaining walls), water and Oil & Gas pipelines, and landslides, embankments and retaining works. The technology is multi-patented in Italy and abroad.

Positioning

InSensus does not aim to compete with high-end, very expensive monitoring systems, but to occupy the market space those solutions leave open: bringing continuous structural monitoring to the infrastructure that, for cost reasons, is still followed only through periodic visual inspections. Deep tech made accessible, from the lab to the real world.

The context we work in

Italy has an estimated 1.5 million-plus bridges and viaducts, most built between 1950 and 1980, of which only a minority currently has digital sensors or IoT systems. The National Plan for the Monitoring of Bridges and Viaducts, launched in 2023, has €275 million in PNRR and PNC funds and plans to install dynamic monitoring systems on around 1,000 structures by 2026, with a further €1.4 billion allocated for 2024–2029. On the regulatory side, Ministerial Decree 204/2022 and its extension (D.M. 9 December 2024) introduce a structured framework for the classification, management and surveillance of existing structures.

In parallel, hydrogeological risk remains a structural issue: the ISPRA 2024 report records over 620,000 mapped landslides and notes that 93.9% of Italian municipalities have areas of high or very high hazard. On water networks, Italy loses on average around 42% of the drinking water fed into the grid, with peaks above 50% in the South.
