Monitoring of the carbon mast (Southern Spars) on the 100′ racing yacht “Black Jack”
On-deck visual warning system and continuous load recording on the carbon mast of the racing yacht Black Jack.

The system provides the crew on deck with a clear and immediate visual indication when deformation levels exceed the norm, approaching the mast’s maximum working load (MWL). The warning system is based on two operational thresholds, corresponding nominally to 85% and 100% of the MWL, and is activated by orange (warning) and red (alarm) lights installed in the yacht’s cockpit. A display is also installed at the navigation station, allowing real-time viewing of the deformation values detected at each monitoring point, together with the percentage relative to the maximum permissible limit.
The system enables the continuous recording of data from the four installed sensors (two positions, port side and starboard side). This data is subsequently processed and correlated with the yacht’s navigation and load information, in order to obtain quantitative feedback to support the design, structural verification and engineering of the mast.
